(newspaper clipping) THE BIG BLACK. Morning dawns with Bowen'a Division behind breastworks by the railroad bridge on the east bank of the Big Black. At 8 o'clock Carr's Division of McClernand's Corps is in a clump of woods on the north side of the road, Osterhaus's on the south side. A. J. Smith is forming on Osterhaus's left. The artillery open, the Union skirmishers advance, Carr's men rush from the woods towards the intrenchments with the cheer. The Confederate troops are disheartened by defeat, worn by down by hard marching. They see that they are in danger of being cut off. Vaughan's Brigade is the first to break, then Bowen's whole division is in flight. The lines dissolve, all order is lost. The soildres are panic stricken. They leave 18 cannon and 1,400 muskets, 1,757 men give themselves up as prisoners. The others reach the bridge, set it on fire, and flee in consternation toward Vicksburg. Sunday night May 17" never were there such a night in Vicksburg. They had been accustomed to the roar of artillery along the river and at Chickasaw bluffs A few days ago Pembertons command had marched out of the City with flying colors to whip Grant. Nor the troops are re entering the City broken routed demoralized and cursing Pemberton may say that they will desert rather than to serve under him again
