[October 18, 1943] Monday night late, Dearest: I am sending you a box of chocolates for your birthday (a sweet morsel for the sweet tooth of a sweet girl). They're the best I could get here, though not nice enough for you. I'll also send you (come next payday) something a little more substantial. But somehow I wanted to send you something I picked out and packed and mailed myself.
