Camp 19" Regt Iowa Vol Infty, Forsyth Mo. April 1st 1863 To His Excellency S. J. Kirkwood, Governor of the state of Iowa. Sir.-- We the non-commissioned officers and privates of Capt Harry Jordans company "B" 19" Regt. Iowa Vol Infty. having learned of the resignation of the Col Crabb of our regiment, and knowing it will leave a vacancy in the field officers and that Capt Jordan is next in line of promotion, and he being absent from the regiment at present, as acting Commissary of subsistence for the 3d Division, Army of the Frontier, do most cheerfully recommend him to you for the office of Major of this regt. (in case that place is made vacant by the promotion of Major Bruce to the office of Lt Col. or any other position you may see fit to give him (Capt Jordan.) Giving as our reasons for so recommending him - That the most of us were personally acquainted with him before we came into the service and know him to be a prompt, energetic business man, and of temperate habits. We elected him as Captain and he has not disappointed us in our expectations of him; but has shown to us, his whole interest was in the cause he was engaged in, and by his indefatigable efforts to learn his duties and to instruct us in ours has won the esteem of every member of the company. And in point of military qualifications, discipline, order and system of doing his duties, we Governer, (if allowed to be judges) shall have to place him second to no officer in the 19" Regt. since we lost our noble Lt. Col McFarland at the Battle of Prairie Grove. And while we have to regret his absence from the
