Camp Powell, Lexington, MO. July 28th 62. Governor Kirkwood. DesMoines City, Iowa. Sir; Believing it to be my duty not only to myself but, my state, I call upon your excellency for assistance in procuring a transfer from this to an Iowa Reg. to which end I propose the following. Captain Brawner, 1st Lieut Bunner and myself are the officers of Co A 7th Cav. Mo Vol.- a Company which was made up in Iowa under the most trying and inauspicious circumstances - We were disappointed in getting into an Iowa Reg. and therefore united our destiny with which was then called the Black Hawk Cavalry, but has since been changed to 7th Cav. Mo. Vols and is commanded by Col David Huston of the U.S.A.
