Germany While we were in Dresden we visited Saxon Switzerland, a delightful boat-trip up the Elbe. The day was superb so we thoroughly enjoyed the boat, the winding of the river through rugged landscapes of treed gradation towering castles and villiages nestling on the hillsides hidden by protecting trees. Near [Rathau?] vertical weathered cliffs approach the waters edge. Some are carved by time into fantastical designs or castle-like effects while others merly play a headdress bedecked with balancing trees. At Rathau a smiling valley, a small miniature of Switzerland breaks through the wall of cliffs and harbors the tiny villiage up its slopes. From here paths lead briskly upward to the heighest weathered paints which project great distance above the river and almost overhang the bank. From the elevation of the [Bastai?] among the points of rocks, bridged by enterprising Germans, we behold magnificent panoramas of country spread out below. which spread out fan shape for miles around, in a variety of ruggedness and rolling scenery - Tree faced hills, plateaus shrouded in [illegible] rise in veritable table land; and from the other bank of the river the earth gradually receded in a gentle slops upward in varigated patches of fields from the protecting embrace of the arm of the Elbe. It is all very beautiful and very delightful as in all the country around Dresden. Leipsig is supposedly more of a modern commercial city but is in reality interesting in its curious houses and some its narrow winding streets. As in all German cities the parks are many and everything is orderly and well-kept. The fur trade in Leipsig is of primary importance. From Leipsig to Amsterdam we had a long hot dirty on the day on the train and stopped over to see the sights. We found Amsterdam much more interesting than we had thought it would be consequently we stayed over longer that we expected to. Amsterdam is literally combed with dirty unwalled canals which teem with traffic of all kinds - barges, junks, and launches steam up and down all day long in endless succession. The streets are awhirl of bicycles - mad things that approach at dismaying uncertainty and soever past at panicky inclines.
