Willametta Turnepseed 202 Roseland East Springfield, Ohio 478 9/11/44 (Monday) Dearest: It seems like a cold spring rather than an early autumn. Ordinarily, when the air is crisp as this, the leaves are turning. So it seems odd to see the leaves defiantly green. I haven't noticed too much thinning of the bird population yet, but then I guess scientists say that it is not weather which controls migration but seasonal changes within the bird's own body, which we call "instinct". In other words, I suppose, instinct is a blind obediance to physiology. Sounds to me as if some profound truth might be contained therein - . My thoughts are with you all the time; do you notice? The Battle of Europe is now very nearly the Battle of Germany. No doubt they will throw all that remains of the Luftwaffe against you, and concentrate on anti-aircraft fire. Tonight we hear of a tremendous air battle in which 48 bombers
