During the engagement today the Regiment made a charge on the Rebels, through a thicket up a steep hill and were completely surrounded, some of the men fighting with club muskets, and a terrible hand to hand fight took place for our colors. One of the color bearers being shot, Howard Zell, Sergeant of Company E, secured the flag, but would no doubt have been killed, but for Capt Brumm, of Company F, who dispatched Zell's assailant, thus saving the colors.
