77 Front of Petersburg, Va Monday July 11th 1864 Very heavy cannonading and considerable musketry during which a man of the 7th Regiment, Delaware Volunteers, was wounded, while crossing a little knoll, near the spring where we secured our drinking water. Commenced raining about 7 oclock this evening and continued until ten. I have been sick all day and this evening was wetted to the skin, hence fear it will be all the worse for me. Tuesday 12th Colonel Overton kindly detailed Wm Taylor, Sergeant of Company K, to attend to my duties until I recover my health. Quarter Master Eckel also sent Daniel Troutman to nurse me.
