99 and just beyond was an open field and then another wood, from which we could see the rebel lines advancing. We were ordered to charge and the enemy fell back under cover of the wood. We advanced to the edge of the wood and then halted and reformed our line. Information was now passed along the line that the rebels occupied the Rifle Pits, in the wood, which our men of the 5th Corps, had built. Then another charge was ordered, when we arived at the Pits a hand to hand contest took place - bayonets, swords and buts of the muskets were used freely, finally we succeeded in capturing the pits and quite a number of the enemy, nearly all belonging to the 47th Virg.
