July, WEDNESDAY, 20, 1864. Church assumed Command of our recd, a letter from Albert advanced a short distance in [illegible] & drew rations advanced in the afternoon when we were Charged on by the Rebs. &. driven a short distance made a stand &. repulsed the Rebs. with heavy loss to them Matthias Thisen was killed & I helped carry him from the field. THURSDAY, 21. lay in our rifle pits all day with no stirring events we were now about 5 miles from Atlanta had very warm weather nothing remarkable going on our pioneers buried a good many dead FRIDAY, 22. advanced &. built rifle pits about 2 miles from Atlanta we had some shelling a family Came from Atlanta in to our lines &. reported that our men were shelling Atlanta they made a heavy Charge on our left
