H&'d Qr&'s 2 Iowa Inft. La Grange Oct 19th 1863. My dear darling wife:- I returned on yesterday evening from an eight days march and found your letters of the 2nd 4th & 6th inst all waiting for me to read them & they made me so happy. I had been gone so long and was so tired and so hungry for a sweet message of love from you my loved wife. Yesterday one week ago we were ordered out after the rebels who were threatening the R R, and we chased them fifteen miles south of "Holly Springs," we marched in all 125 miles. We could not catch the rascals. They attacked Collierville with a force 2500 strong and were repulsed and severely punished by about 300 of the 66 Ind. wase&'nt that well done? Well I am back safe in camp and glad of it. My health is most excellent. I am so sorry for you. You will be so anxious to get my letters and wondering what can be the matter that I do not write. But I could not help it and it will not be but a little while now until you will be getting my letters regular again. No doubt you do miss your general reading and studying very much since you have been in the country and
