In bivouac 10 mi S of Merryville, La Sunday, August 17, 1941 11:05 A.M. My dearest Dorothea: I received your two good letters about 9:30 last night and read them in bed with the flashlight. I was surely glad to get them We moved out yesterday and drove about 20 miles and then drove off the road into a woods and in it until we came to a creek. There we set up head quarters. We unloaded our field desks, tables typewriters and chairs. Then some cots for those who were not working to rest on. After about an hour, we got word to move again and we moved about 7 miles further and set up headquarters in a pine grove on a knoll. The Headquarters and Service Company is about a mile from us and we have to go there for our food, although we sleep out here. We put up a pyramidal tent and set our desks and maps up in it. Then Griff and I set up cots and spread our blankets on them and took off our clothes and went to bed. Our underclothes are so dirty and sweaty that they stink. This morning, after breakfast, I drove the truck for the Chaplain for Church. After Church here, we drove
