JAG School, Ann Arbor, Mich. Feb 11, 1943 Dearest Dorothea: I don't know whether you have to file again for the homestead exemption. But you can find out by calling the City Assessor or Arnold Zuranski at the County Clerk's Office or the County Auditor or the County Treasurer. It wouldn't hurt to ask a couple of them to be sure. You will probably have to have the kids shoes half soled now - so had better get rather heavy ones so the uppers wont wear out so fast. I doubt if you will use more than three pair per person per year. I'll work on the income tax this week end. But I see where Iowa has cut it 50% by the Detroit paper. Yes, the doctor bill looks fairly high. Don't you have some insurance that covers it? If so, you should make out a claim. Yes, it is good that it wasn't any worse. I hope your rain there melted the ice and snow some. The rain here only froze and made more ice. We went on a practice hike this afternoon and it was very disagreeable. It snowed part of the time we were out and the walks were very slick and it was quite cold. We went through one of the city parks on the way. One fellow got pretty worn out and had to be helped back to barracks. Most of them are pretty soft. He has been a U.S. District Attorney (Asst) for several years. I found out yesterday that one of the fellows was a former Attorney General of Arkansas. Really lots of legal talent here.
