6 To Mrs John N. Calhoun 216 1/2 Jerfferson Street Burlington Iowa From Capt John N. Calhoun APO 8963 New York, N.Y Aug 5,1943 Dearest Dorothea: Not much new or different today. It was pretty warm in our quarters last night but has been much cooler today. One of our companions, Dave Gafill had a birthday today 35 years old - from Detroit, Mich - and gave him an almond hershey bar and toasted him with a glass of fresh water. What is new with you? Hope you got the paint job on the house OK. Also that you got the July allotment check without any delay. Maybe it will help to clear up your financial troubles some. Only a few more days until Cliffie's birthday. He surely is a nice boy. But so are John R and Carol Ann nice kids, too. In our cabin, we have Capt Jenifer, Capt Allen, Capt Caldwell & Capt Richeson as Company Commanders, Capt Price as one of the Abandon Ship wardens, Capt Knutson as an Intelligence Officer, myself as Summary Court Officer and Capt Birse and Capt Marrow who have no special ship duties. We feel pretty important. Take good care of yourself. Don't work too hard. I'll be seeing you soon. Love & kisses, Daddy.
