Aug 4, 1943 Dear Dorothea: This has been a warm day. Last night it was so hot that practically everyone slept without covers or even pajamas. This morning we passed through a rain. We could see it ahead of us and then gradually got in to more and more of it until at last it was really pouring down. There was very little wind and the sea was as calm as before it started raining. We rode along for almost an hour and a half and then we could see the lighter sky ahead and then came to it and the rain stopped. The rain water was warm. I took a salt water bath and it is quite different. The water is sharp. It really smarts your eyes if you get any in them. I washed my head and the hair was almost gummy. But put some hair oil on and it doesn't look so bad. They appointed me Summary Court Officer but so far have had no business. Hope I don't, as I'm having lots of fun watching them drag the ocean past us as we sit on the deck. Some land birds again today which probably doesn't mean much. Love & kisses Daddy
