Burlington, Ia Feb. 24, 1943 My Dearest: Well I missed writing you a letter last night, as it was after ten o'clock before I got home from work & was just too tired to write or do anything else. I stayed home all day today. It was my turn to have the full day off. I took your mother down town shopping & bought her a new red dress for helping me out. She was tickled pink. Then she bought a new coat (navy blue) and a black hat, so she is quite fixed up. I called out to the Griesels this morning & asked them to come in for supper tonight. And while talking I found out it was their 34th wedding anniversary. I got a swiss steak and it was delicious. We had cauliflower, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes (candied) slaw, peppermint sherbet & angel food cake. Mrs Griesel had a cold & didn't feel so hot. Mr Griesel is quite thin & Don is getting bigger everyday. Mrs Griesel said to tell you, she would get a dinner & invite us all out next year on the 35th & hopes you will be here. They all said to send you their best regards. Don said it wasn't necessary for you to [illegible] will try & write again soon. I got the new ration books today. I only had 23 cans on hand, so didn't have to declare any. I believe I would have been smarter if I had have bought up a lot of cans & then declared it.
