Burlington, Ia. [Iowa] July 12, 1942 My Dearest: - This has been a very lonely day. I have missed you so much today. I was so worn out last nite, I went to bed as soon as I was through with my work. Ruth had been canning beans all day. She canned 30 qt. [quarts] and when I got home, I made 10 glasses of red raspberry jam. By that time, I was all worn out, so went to be without writing you a letter. I didn't get up until 8:30 this morning and then broke my neck to get ready for sunday school. We were about 25 min [minutes] late, but made up for it by staying for church. Cliff and Carol stayed with me and were very good. Rev. [reverend] Smith asked about you and said he was sorry he didn't get to see you. It has been raining all afternoon and I have been asleep for a couple hours. I mean trying to sleep. Cliff and Carol have been fighting all afternoon. John R is still up to Fairfield [city] or down to Keo. [Keokuk?], I don't know which. I have missed him today. Guess he will be all O.K. I had a very hard day yesterday. I was glad to have today to rest in. I hope tomorrow will let up a little. I am afraid I will undo all I have done by my vacation.
