Burlington, IA May 10, 1942 Sunday PM 11:45 My Dearest Just got home from Kingon's and am ready for bed, but will drop you a few lines first. We had a very nice time, but as usual missed you. Mac wasn't there either, as he has been working from 9 at nite until five in the morning. Marie sure don't like the hours. I drove to Fairfield last nite. Got in, there about 8:15. We saw your mother & Herb's last nite. She was up there for mother's Day. They were going out to Gilbert's for dinner. Your mother looks pretty well but has had a cold she told me. She said she had a [illegible] letter from you & was pleased. I sent her a nice pair of hose & put it from all of us. She is looking for Van next Sunday so will go up there I guess. I sure hate to make the trip so soon again, but can't be helped. I notice we have over 52,000 miles on the car now. That is getting up there. Folks were so glad to have us. Mother & Dad were, as usual all worn out. We all went to S.S. & Carol & Gladys, Mother, Dad, & I went to church. Carol went to sleep. I brought home $9.00 worth of groceries tonite. I bought quite a bit of canned goods. I will bring some along, as I can so we won't be able to can so much this summer. We had a very good dinner. Kids ate very well. The folks cut an arch between the small bedroom & the room Gladys used to have & put an outside stairway & porch on at the back. They are fixing an apt. out of it. It is going to look real nice I think. They are getting the rooms papered now. Hope they can rent it now. It has been raining out again tonight & is rather cool. This is good weather for the grass though. I haven't had to water it. It is coming up quite good. When I arrived home tonite, there was a telegraph under the door for me. It surely was a nice one and thanks so much. It was worded so beautifully. I hope you think I have been a good mother. Sometimes I think I have done a poor job of it. I get so cross and raise my voice. Raising a family is really a full time job to do it right, but maybe it will all turn out O.K. Hope so! Talking to Ed & Conrad about driving the car back there & they advise me to go on the train.
