Burlington, IA Mon May 4, 1942 9:30pm My Dearest Rec'd two letters from you today written on Wed. & Thursday. Also the check and thanks very much. I am getting along fairly well. I still own Buettner's $30, but will pay $15 on the 15th of this month so will cut that down to $15.00 Then I owe Ruth & the bank and that is all that I know of. I had to buy some new garden hose to keep the lawn watered & that set me back $9.00 but just had to do it for there is no use of having it die on us now that we have paid out to have it sodded. How much insurance do you have to pay this month? I guess mine with Mrs. Lundgrew isn't due until [illegible]. It won't be so much as she had traded a lot of it out, then I will have another in Sept. I would love to come back out but don't see how I can afford it financially. I really would be afraid to start out in the car with those two old tires. Do you have any idea whether you will get a better time to come home before they send you somewhere? That would probably be the best. Well I went over to the school at eight this morning & got my sugar rationing book. I filled out for the
