March 11, 1942 Dear Dad and Mother: I got word today that i passed all my tests and am qualified for air mechanics. This still doesn't definitely mean ill get to attend school but it does mean i qualified. Dad never wanted a mechanic so i may be one any how. There were quite a few who didn't qualify so i feel pretty good about it. I hit a jack pot today got three letters and card today. One from Uncle Raymond, Bob, card from lumber yard, and a letter from Florence + Archie Musser. We had a drill parade today in front of the commanding offer but i didn't have to march because i don't have a complete uniform. About 4,400 men. I just sent out for some ice cream for supper, the food is pretty awful here so lots of us only go to two meals a day. We can buy ice cream for 12 cents a pint, apples, oranges, etc. You should see how tan I'm getting, some of the fellows are as red as beets but I'm tanning. Attended four lecture movies today and drilled for a while. When I get permanently located I want some clothes line and coat hangers.
