April 3, 1942 Dear Folks: I passed the first phase of my training yesterday I had an average of 87% this isnt so bad as the highest grade possible is 90% There were some that got 88 but I was well satisfied. I must have gotten 95 in my final test to get this grade. A lot of them say the basic or final phase is the toughest but I'll soon know as I start 2nd phase today. The reason they only will give a high of 90% they say no one is perfect and they will only give 85% on laboratory work. This counts 79% of your final grade and your daily tests and final test count 30% They asked if any would care to be instructors and I put my name down. I don't care about it and probably wont get it but it doesn't matter. I learned to solder. I don't think I every soldered before, learned lots about tools electricity etc. The hardest was about the forms and technical orders, instructions of the army by which all work must comply with. Details which must be filled out on airplane inspection etc.
