Sept. 1, 1942 Wendover, Utah Dear Dad & Mom: Got a letter from Francis (Baven?) yesterday. I was greatly surprised to hear from him. Also had a letter from the Wagners, the neighbors out by the farm. We are on eight hour shifts now or perhaps I told you. Work eight hours and are off sixteen every day. Have three shifts my hours this week are from 3:30 PM until 12 midnight or 15:30 to 24:00. We change every week unless some other arrangements are made. Today we were issued some grand new outfits sheepskin lined leather pants, jackets gloves, and heavy boots an laces. Also a heavy knit woolen sweater. I expect it is pretty cold for the maintenance crews in the winter time. We well get helmets soon. I hope I can help them when I get out of the army, the pants aren't quite big enough but they'll do. Just got back from dinner, a good meal spare ribs, mashed potatoes, gravy, spinach, string beans, cabbage salad, bread, butter, jelly and mixed fruit (pineapple, peaches & pears) and lemonade. We always have some sort of drink iced tea, lemonade or artificial fruit drinks. One crew of cooks is far better than the other, its easy to tell which one is on by the food. Henry Busse and his orchestra were here last night. He has a grand band but I was working and didnt get to hear him. Once in a while I could here it clear out on the line where I was working. Everyone enjoyed it. There was a couple of specialty acts, girls dancing and one of the band members had a little trained
