Sept. 6, 1942 Wendover, Utah Dear Dad & Mom: It's another beautiful Sunday out here on the desert. I missed church, I worked till late and overslept this morning. Just got back from shaving and taking a shower and feel fine. Im trying to write this amid snores of the fellows who just got off duty and have to sleep daytimes. Tomorrow I will go on that shift, never could sleep in the daytime but maybe if a fellow gets tired enough it will work. We are having turkey for dinner today I saw them last night, beautiful [illegible] and the good cooks are working so we will have a real meal I think. Dont know what will go with it but something good I reckon. Our squadron had its first tragedy last night I expect you have been hearing about it over the radio and have worried. You dont need to worry about me because I haven't flown yet and dont expect to. It was one of our planes and I knew the fellows who were lost, one lived in our barracks just across the aisle from me and the others close by. It was an unavoidable accident no one knows what happened or how but its over and no different. than the hundreds of automobile accidents which are always happening. Everyone is feeling blue but are making the best of it, flights are going on as scheduled and fellows are flying when there turn comes up. When you stop to think of the hours those planes fly things like this dont happen often. Ive been playing ping pong quite a little lately I never did think much of it but find its quite a game, some of the fellows get in some [illegible] games they have regular tournaments . Some real good players
