May 25, 42 Dear Dad + Mother: I missed writing yesterday, as usual went to town to church with a couple of fellows from our barracks. We were invited to go for a ride in the afternoon a gentleman took us and thru the oil fields, showed us how the oil was pumped and then over to a place where they were drilling a well. It was very interesting driving 60 or 70 miles in all. The country is pretty much [illegible] with mesquite + a good sprinkling of cactus. Its whats underneath rather than whats on top that makes this country. I got by [illegible[ pretty fair made an 86 for the course which was as high as anyone got i guess. So far my tests average 95 in [illegible] but I expect I'll hit a tough one+ knock my average down, just so. I get by. It;s mighty interesting and I believe Im learning more than I ever thought I could. I was glad to receive your letters + read those from Russell + Wayne Granger. I had to go to the Post Office for the last two (3 [cent sign] postage due]. I didn't mind the 3 [cent sign] but it makes them two days late I guess they are trying to make up for the soldiers free mail by overcharging those at home. I'll try + write both of them someday. Got a letter from you, Chuck [Idooner?], Uncle Raymound, + Chas [Raeppel?] + the [Argo] today so I had a good day. We get memorial Day off I'd like to spend it in Iowa but don't reckon I will. Adeline must have had a nice trip, she sent me two cards from new Orleans. One of my friends family was in new
