July 15, 1942 Dear Dad & Mom, I have certainly had a lot of nice trips since the fourth of July. It was such a grand trip out to Salt Lake and now another. We left S. L. Sunday afternoon we went first class again ate on the diner etc. We went clear out in California within about fifty miles of Los Angeles and then south thru the orange groves and irrigated farming country it looked mighty pretty they had first cut their [illegible]and many were putting up alfalfa. We are living in a brand new barracks out here doesn't even have the electricity hooked upmost of their have air conditioning units but we [illegible] ours in yet. It is very very warm here but it does cool off nights. This camp is right out in the desert among the cactus and sag brush. We have these great tall cactus & Joshua trees and every kind of cactus imaginable. I have been assigned to a bombing squadron the 356th. I haven't been here long enough to know just what I'll do, its hard to tell the army does so many funny things I may end up as a baker or clerk. This is quite a new field and there is a lot construction going on new barracks, theaters mess halls etc. We just had barracks inspection by a lieutenant Colonel. I guess we passed okay.
