vessel, the Walmer Castle. Troops were embarking all about us and when our boat was finally loaded the gang plank was lifted and there we lay until the next morning at 11, as far from N.Y. as if we were in the middle of the ocean. There were 15 troop ships in our convoy - all camouflaged and all loaded to the last foot with our boys. We had an escort of 8 submarine chasers- a destroyer a cruiser and hydroplanes which stayed with us until we were about 200 miles out. The cruiser and destroyer, however came over with us. The first two days were such that we all prefer not to remember them but after that the weather was perfect and we sailed along together trying to make ourselves think that there might be danger, but finding it hard to realize in the presence of so many splendid boats. We were very close together most of the way over so that we could hail the other boats
