their furloughs so will have a game. We are going to eat in the barracks tonight as one of the fellows has a box of assorted cheese, peanut butter, sardines, crackers, fruit cake, cookies etc so you can see we all fared pretty well. Our planes arent flying today but you can bet they are ready for action. in case anybody thinks U.S.A. might be napping on a holiday. When we first got here there was an alert sounded that some unknown ships were sighted off the coast of California and planes were gassed, loaded with ammunition & bombs in no time and were flying for the coast, it turned out they werent enemy ships but if they had been they would have received a warm reception. It was quite a thrill seeing real bombs loaded instead of practice ones. Last night or this morning one of our maintenance men left one of our work stands out on the ramp where he had been loading a gun. A plane belonging to the 420th squadron ran into it and tore a hole in the fuselage. It wasnt much damage but I expect they will raise heck with us over it, someone will get busted. It wasnt the fault of the maintenance men but they usually get the dirt hung on them. Had a nice Christmas present today, I made sergeant, hope I can keep it. Wish all the guys could get it as they all deserve it, many Im sure more than I do. It will pay $78 per month and there is talk of giving crew chiefs flying time which is [507.?] more which would make pretty good money. Hope you folks are having a very happy day Id rather be with you than any place in the world. Love Johnny
