We went on a [Maeadamized?] road and up the west side of the [Salient?] where the German army was broken I will draw you a little scheme of the thing as it appeared to me. the signs of battle were quite marked all along the road the graves and the soldiers marking he way. The woods [Belleau] or Marine Woods as they are now called bore signs of very severe fighting the trees are shot away sometimes a tree 1 1/2 ft thick being shot away. The smaller ones are moved right down. Places where the guns were placed by the Germans to [illegible] out the Americans if they had tried to take the ridge above Chaliau [Thrievy] [illegible] encircling it by [Laping Belleau?] Woods. The small towns through which we passed were badly demolished and here and there
