Dec 19th 1918 My Dearest Bess: I was awfully surprised and shocked when I learned of [Lavernes?] death although we must expect some of the boys to go. And it is a game of chance when this thing is on. [He?] probably lived more in his short life than many who have plodded for years. I have found out that he was killed in the Argonne forest. I will do my best to try and locate his grave but I question my ability to do so. I will try and get down there before I leave. I rather think that will be before long as we will soon close this hospital; I would not be surprised to be back in the States in 1½ mo. You had better not make any arrangements to go south until you hear from me
