Rome Jan. 21. 1919. My Dearest Bess. Well I have arrived at this city on my way to Serbia and have had such a time getting things straightened out that this is the first time I have had a chance to write to you. We left Paris on a special car Saturday night and came over the Alps at [Mondau?] about noon Sunday. That is the border of France. From there we went to Turin where we had supper and struck Genoa about mid night. Then by way of Florence to Rome getting in here Tuesday. The alps are surely a wonder with the valleys [culervated?] and running the gardens up the mountain side
