The steps of Pilot which lead to his throne and up which Christ walked are there and the people worship there. The churches or Rome and the buildings are so enwrapped in history of the early periods that one can see history much plainer I only wish we could spend a year in these countries looking around at our leisure as it would be very enjoyable and instructive 5 of us fellows Hundling Reed and two other fellows that I do not know very well came down here and got to bed around 2 a.m. Arose at 7 a.m. and were by steam car to Pompeii which is a small town near the old town. The [weather?] fine oranges and lemons bearing fruit while in the distance some of the peaks of smaller Appenines are seen snow capped. The trip up took about an hour and we arrived all curious at the gate or Porte of the old city of Pompeii which
