Sun. 30 Nothing of importance occurred today. It rained very hard. I wrote several letters. I have been looking for employment for the last week, but I found that it is very difficult to obtain it at present. Mon. 1 October 1. Another month has opened, and with new hopes and fears I look upon my further career, can I succeed in life? How will I pass most usefully through the world? These are momentous questions which I can not answer, I am ready to do whatever providence desires me to do if I only knew what it is, for the time has come when, I stand alone, as a man, and must look after my own concerns. Tues. 2. We did not hear any thing of importance from our armies for some time, although the report stating that Fremont is removed turns out to be false, the report is that his case is still under consideration by the cabinet, if they take away Fremont, the west will be ruined. The people will not permit it. Wed. 3. I stood a pretty good chance of being lieutenant in the active campaign of city guards, but this Fremont difficulty has apparently quashed this organization.
