This evening I listened with a good crowd of my fellow citizens to a speech by Henry O'Connor, he spoke well and kept the audience spellbound till a late hour in the evening. Seven recruits placed their name on the list of Capt. Hill's company. Tues. 15 This morning I was called to defend a man named [Haller] against a charge of assault & battery brought against him by one [Huttig]. My client was honorably acquitted. This made the party interested and myself feel quite well, it [sooned] me of course it being my first attempt to plead my clients case. The Germans think much of me. I am gradually rising in public esteem. Wed. 16 Yesterday I saw Mr. J. [Insco] Williams' grand [panorama] of the Bible, it consists of about 40,000 sqr ft of canvas, and is the finest canvas painting I ever saw. I was very much pleased with it. [It] took five years to paint it,. [Mister] Hayes returned from Iowa city. I went to D.C. [blond] with McCampbell and talked about war matters with him, he feels like going to war, and will probably receive the [colonely] of the regiment in this district, he promised to recommend me for a commission to recruit
