January 1st 1863 Thurs. 1 Here we are at Columbus Ky. the place formerly occupied by the rebel forces. There are some very formidable works here, and some remains of very extensive camps. The secesh seem to be good in building military works. We were busily engaged in making our camp comfortable and supposed we would have a quiet new year’s day, the boys prepared themselves for a good jollification, when suddenly the long roll sounded, and the report came in that the enemy was approaching. The men were under arms in a few minutes and formed in line of battle, when Gen. Tuttle came and informed us that the alarm was occasioned by the old advance guard discharging their pieces. We retired to our quarters. The officers had a meeting concerning O’Connor.
