Fri. 2 I have been working hard ever since we came to this place, to make my men, comfortable, and have in a great measure succeeded. We are encamped in a bottom, where we are in danger of being washed out, by a respectable rain. Sat. 3 Today i went on the important and pleasant duty called picket with 80 privates, 8 corporals, 4 Sergs, and 2 Lts. We got along very nicely till about midnight when a terrific storm arose, the forest shook with the wind and the rain descended in torrents. I tied my horse to a tree, wrapped myself in a blanket and took a pretty good nap under a majestic hickory. Sun. 4 Early this morning I went to town and took breakfast. It is a very fine day ate hickory nuts until relieved about two P. M. and walked to camp and slept.
