Mon 5. One of my men who was left at M. city returned with Col. Hill, he reports that one of my boys left the hospital and enlisted in the ram fleet service. I consider him a deserter, his name is D. Sauer. Inspected some hard bread this evening, which was issued to us, it is not fit to be eaten. The report is that we shall go down the river very soon. The weather is most glorious. Tues. 6 A certain desponding feeling pervades the regiment, the men are becoming very much dissatisfied with the conduct of the war, and desire its speedy conclusion, they think the end will be a disgraceful compromise, and if so we might as well stop now without making any further sacrifices of blood and treasure. C. Kranz intends to resign. Wed. 7 The report is circulated today that the states of Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana (there legislatures being largely democratic) intend to secede. I know though such action will be overwhelmingly condemned by the people.
