Thurs. 8 The different regiments which have been stationed here for the last few weeks are gradually departing for more southern ports. Our doom seems to be to bring up the rear, and do garrison duty. I am getting tired of this and, hope that we may soon be sent further south, that we may say “we came we saw we conquered.” Rosencranz whipped the rebels badly at Murfreesboro, but our loss is also very heavy. Nothing definite from Vicksburg although it said to be captured by our army. Our army under Gens. Blunt and Herron crossed the Boston Mts. in ArK. and destroyed a great amount of rebel stores. Gen. Carter also made a splendid dash at the enemies R. R. communicating with Gen. Bragg and the rebel capital. I think things are in a very lax state here, if this continues long I would not give much for our forces here. I was officer of the day of the post guard yesterday. I staid with Lt. Col. Rothrock tonight, he is quite ill.
