Sat. 24. This A. M. I employed in collecting several old tents, to repair ours, and to lay a carpet. We are trying make ourselves more comfortable and to get our sleeping places from the ground in order to avoid disease. Cos. I and F went to Cairo today. I made the acquaintance of Messrs Grant two men who have the supervision of the negroes here, they are gentlemen. I had a little dispute with lt. C. Kranz. Sun. 25. This morning early we commenced striking the officers’ tents, so as to put them up in a better shape. We had procured sufficient lumber and canvas for floor and carpet, some of our boys assisted us in putting it up and I can assure you we have now the best quarters in the regiment. We also had some lounges made and now I feel more at home here. We completed our arrangements in time before the rain commenced, it is pouring down now. Rec. a letter & Co. from Carrie.
