Mon. 26 The storm and rain are still giving us their disagreeable company. I received two letters today one form Nellie Barrows, the other from David Allan jr. I have been writing all evening. Lt. Kranz is sick and Lt. Mayer is on picket guard. Was busy during the day in arranging things in our tents. Tues. 27 I was officer of the day, got a good horse and being accompanied by Lt. Spencer and three mounted orderlies I examined the pickets, after this I rode out, with Lt. Spencer, to Mr. Bullocks’, where we were well received and had a splendid dinner. We had a fine ride, and pleasant weather. Went to the “Red White & Blue”. Staid in town till 11 P. M. Cold tonight. Wed. 28. Was present at guard mounting before breakfast. Got through by 10 A. M. Mr. Fred Tappe of Muscatine visited our Camp today, he is engaged in the sutler business at Corinth in the 7th Iowa. Lts. Came home quite late.
