Thurs. 29 The greater part of the day was spent in writing letters to my friends. Mr. G Warsham from Muscatine is here to see his son. Many of the boys rec’d letters containing money, I rec’d one from father containing $1.00. Had Capt. Vanderhork and Lt. Graetsch here of the 5th Minnesota, they are very sociable. Cold. Fri. 30. Lt. Mayer returned early this morning from a night’s debauch. I visited the sick men and my friends in the hospital found them improving. Also saw a man and his son, by the name of Tandemal with whom I was aquainted in St. Louis Mo over 12 years ago. they recognized me and said I had not changed much. I did considerable writing. Mr. Warsham took four letters for me to Muscatine, I saw him off on the Ad Hine. Pitched quoits with the boys. Weather pleasant. Sat. 31. The above mentioned Lt. did the same this morning as yesterday. The regulars, detachments of the 15th & 16th Inf. left for the South this morning. We took possession of their bakery. This month is closing up poorly with a very heavy rain. I do not feel very well.
