Tues. 3 Early this morning about 3 A. M. I received orders from Col. Hill to have my company ready to embark on the str. U. S. for Cairo at 9 A. M. I gave notice to the Company and got every thing ready, when about 6 A. M. the above order was countermanded and I received orders to embark on the S. Bayard for Island No 10, where, as rumor stated, the rebels intended to make an attack, every body seemed to believe that a fight would be certain there. Co’s B & C went on board with very good spirits all round. Approached the Island about 10 ½ A. M. landed near the gun boat New Era, reported to the Commander of the post who laughed at the idea we came to reinforce him, he said there was no rebel within ten miles of the island. We pitched our tents, and made ourselves pretty comfortable. The other five comp’s arrived about 9 P. M. The general came down with them. The gun boat officers got up the alarm.
