Wed. 11 German minister, we had considerable sport with them. Slept a greater part of the afternoon, had a nice time in the evening. About 8 P. M. we lay to near the Mo. shore, while we were enjoying ourselves about 12 P. M. a terrific storm arose, which threatened to destroy our frail steamer, but finally changed into rain. We passed two boats that were fast on a sand bar, this afternoon. Thurs. 12. This morning I called the roll of my men and found that about one half of them had deserted. Made out my report to the commanding officer of Benton Barracks St. Louis Mo. Arrived in the city about 1 P. M. I formed my men immediately on the levee and marched them to Benton Barracks; it was very muddy. I had some trouble in delivering them. Met some of my old friends from Iowa. Received a letter from Muscatine. Saw my brother Charles. Put up at the Everett House. Went to the Varieties Theater.
