Sat. 14. Dr. Keables and I did a large amount of business this morning, making, so to speak, the grand rounds among the government officials, but did not accomplish what I desired to. The doctor persuaded me to go home with him today, accordingly we started, after bidding my brother and other friends farewell, about 5 ¼ P. M. reached the O. & M. R.R. depot in good season, and were soon on our passage toward home. I spent a pleasant evening in company with Mrs. Nellie Williams. Had a poor supper, for which I had to pay the enormous price of 75 cents for each person. Well we must all learn by experience here in Illinois, and elsewhere people are after making money by any means. Sun. 15. Early this morning, I arrived in the "City of mud" Cairo. I found some changes had taken place in my Comp. with regard to messes. I had to stand a censure by the Col. for writing a certain article about my lts.
