Thurs. 19. Having been considerably annoyed by my lieutenants, who even went so far as to have an article published against me in the Muscatine Courier, and having attempted to treat me with the utmost contempt, I thought it my duty to prefer charges and specifications against them. But the Colonel thought it would be best to settle it otherwise if possible, he called the lieutenants, and talked to them about their conduct, they thought that I had not treated them with due deference & Co. They told him however that they were willing to settle the difficulty amicably with me, and do better in the future provided, I was willing. I was called, and we agreed to settle it on the basis that bygones should be bygones. Nothing that had occurred, previous to this should ever under any circumstances be brought up, but to start with a clean sheet, and make a new beginning entrely.
