Sun. 22. This is the great Washington’s birthday, what mighty changes have taken place since he lived, could he behold this country today, he would most assuredly weep over the degeneration of our race, oh what a glorious work did he with the assistance of his cotemporaries perform, what a splendid work of liberty did he erect, yet those traitors of 1863 attempt to pull it down, and treat its noble founder with contempt. O spirit of the departed hero, breathe over them thy heavenly influence, and bid them to desist from their infernal designs, and give the country once more its peace and former prosperity, and all the people will rejoice. Mon. 23. I was on board the new iron clad gun boat, which is nearly ready to move upon Vicksburg, it is a terrible monster, having 180 prds on board. I think it will do terrible execution. Woe to the rebels. 34 guns were fired from fort Defiance in honor to Washington’s birthday. A scare got onto the navy today.
