Tues. 24 How time slips by and what little improvement do we make, that really effects us or our fellow men, yes time goes on and ere we are aware our last moment is present with us, I must try to improve it better than I have done, I have been very careless recently. But it has ended or will end with this month. Wed. 25 Nothing of any importance has transpired today. It is rumored that the conscription bill, making every citizen and those who declared their intention to become such, between the ages of 20 and 45 years subject to military duty. It is also reported that the excellent ram steamer, “Queen of the West” has been captured by the rebels. This is a severe loss on our part, for she has done a great deal of harm to the rebels, by her daring, in running the blockade and destroying several rebel vessels. Thurs. 26 The rivers are rising rapidly threatening Cairo with another flood, but the dam around the city is in good order, so that we have nothing to fear at present.
