March 1 Sun. 1 Had those of my men who were confined yesterday, released, and censured them publicly before the company. The weather has been splendid, yet symptoms of a speedy change of the same are not presenting themselves, and I fear another term of rain and mud. This month has commenced and still we have not received our pay, it is really strange that the government does not pay us for six months. There is many a man in my company whose family is dependent upon his wages, for a livelihood. The men do not complain very much yet. But I am afraid they will soon, if the paymaster does not pay up. Mon. 2. The conscription bill has passed congress, which permits a man to free himself from military duty, by paying $300.
