Tues. 3 There are vague rumors from below of a battle having taken place in which our forces are reported to have suffered a terrible defeat. But I hope it is not true, if it true evey thing else being very discouraging I am afraid that we shall never conquer. Wed. 4 Captain Ben Beach of Company H of the 11 Iowa, arrived today, he was Kranz’ old captain, they got on a jollification and got pretty high. He is a fine man. Thurs. 5. Was officer of the day again did not make any material improvements. Lt. Wm. Stewart went to St. Louis in charge of some prisoners, and was accompanied by his wife. Heard that the Copperheads have carried the Charter election of Muscatine which does certainly not please me, yet I must bear it, and look at it with contempt, and console myself with the thought, that when we get back, things will take a change.
