Tues. 10 Early this morning Companies B & D started out toward Union and Marion counties of this state in quest of the deserters of the 128 Illinois Regiment. I am afraid it will be a wild goose chase, the deserters will skedaddle. Wed. 11. I am improving slowly yet, I am still taking medicine. I don’t see why I cannot be well and hearty as I should be, but I suppose it is owing to the poor state of my liver, which was hurt in a mob in St. Louis some years ago and it has never recovered from it. Toward evening my complaint seems to get worse. Thurs. 12. This morning about 10 A. M. I received orders to pack up and be ready to leave at a moment’s warning. We packed up. In the afternoon general Asboth arrived here with several regiments of infantry and we are also going up the Tenn. to fight traitors.
