Sat. 14 Hindman where the rebels were reported to be in considerable force. We crawled up to the fort in the wake of the gun boats, but could discover nobody save one man on horseback who seemed to be standing picket, a shell from one of the gunboat guns made him skedaddle hastily. We started on to Paris Landing where tracks of horses and men were discovered, which were quite new, but nobody save a negro could be found, although numerous buildings and a fine location indicated a wealthy owner, who had left. We disembarked and marched about two miles ready for action, but were ordered back, the other troops went to fort Hindman, where they found no rebels. We had battalion drill and dress parade. Some boys set several buildings on fire which were destroyed. I had the pleasure of being on picket.
